Workshop Overview

Effective maintenance is essential for all manufacturing, process and facility organizations and is dependent upon well-trained maintenance professionals with the requisite skills, knowledge and best practice standards and methods to assure that effectiveness.  The Maintenance Management Certificate Program provides a comprehensive management development program for existing and aspiring maintenance management professionals. Consisting of six 2-day sessions, the program provides proven standard processes ranging from activity-based budgeting and cost control to engaging the workforce. A seventh 2-day session permits the participants to specialize their learnings for either manufacturing or facilities application.  Upon successful completion of the 7-part program, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion from The University of Alabama College of Continuing Studies.

Session 1
Maintenance Management
  • The role of maintenance in a world-class organization – concise understanding of the critical role maintenance must provide to achieve sustainable enterprise success.
  • Mission, roles, responsibilities, accountability and expectations – create an organization that clearly understands its mission, expectations and responsibilities.

Session 2
Storerooms: Inventory/Spare Parts Management
  • Vision for Maintenance and the MRO storeroom – The salient factors for an effective MRO management program.
  • MRO Storerooms Setup – Best practices for MRO storerooms, including mission, layout, material handling requirements and staffing.
  • Inventory and Spare Parts Management – Initial stocking levels, replenishment, economic reorder requirements, kitting and disbursement, inventory and obsolescence management.

Session 3
Management Skills for Maintenance Managers and Supervisors
  • Management Skills – Best practices maintenance managers and front-line supervisors.
  • Involving the Workforce – Management techniques to engage and involve the maintenance workforce.

Session 4
Management Strategies for Maintenance Managers and Supervisors
  • Management Strategies – Concise understanding of the various maintenance strategies employed by successful organizations. Includes Lean, Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Reliability- based Maintenance (RCM) and Risk-based asset management (RBAM).
  • Strategy Selection – How to select an effective maintenance strategy for specific industries or facilities.
  • Implementing Strategy – How to implement identified strategy.

Session 5
Predictive Maintenance Programs and Their Methodology
  • Preventive-Predictive Maintenance – Definition of terms; effective application of time-driven preventive and condition-based predictive maintenance technologies.
  • Preventive Maintenance Basics – Define maintenance activity types and their proper application.
  • Predictive Maintenance Basics – Concise overview of available technologies and their proper application.

Session 6
Budgeting for Maintenance: A Behavior-Based Approach
  • Budgeting for Maintenance – Develop an effective activity-based budget for a world-class maintenance organization. A standard process and methodology to create optimum sustaining maintenance for critical assets.
  • Cost Management – Effective methods and processes to continuously evaluate and manage maintenance expenditures; to manage the maintenance budget and assure sustaining maintenance.
  • Key Performance Indicators – Leading and lagging performance indicators that enable effective maintenance management.

Session 7
Electives in Factory Maintenance and Building Maintenance
Session 7 permits the participants to evaluate application of the processes and techniques learned in the proceeding session for their specific need. Each participant can choose to attend a final 2-day workshop that is tailored to either manufacturing/process plants or facilities.
Session 7a
Managing Factory and Process Industry Maintenance
  • Tailors the best practices provided in sessions 1 – 6 to discrete manufacturing and process industries applications. Ensures that lessons learned are applied properly for the participant’s application.

Session 7b
Managing Building and Facilities Maintenance
  • While fundaments of effective maintenance management are universal, facilities, e.g. hospitals, data centers, etc. have unique requirements that must be addressed. Session 7B interprets the lessons learned in sessions 1 – 6 into practical application in facilities applications.

Paul Borders, CMRP, CRL


PAUL BORDERS is a Principal Consultant with Life Cycle Engineering, Inc. (LCE). Prior to joining LCE, Paul worked as a strategic manufacturing manager for over 17 years. His experience includes progressive expertise in top quality plant operations, quality control, safety, and environmental management. As a plant leader, Paul delivered significant performance improvements in operating metrics: productivity, quality, safety, cost-effectiveness, profitability, and employee engagement. He has gained extensive experience across a wide variety of industries including oil refining, chemicals, mining, metals and pharmaceuticals. His first hand experience in implementing Reliability excellence uniquely positions him to assist others. Enabled through LCE’s Reliability Excellence (Rx) process, Paul helps companies sustain performance improvements by driving culture change to ensure new systems become a fundamental way of life. Paul is also a facilitator with the Life Cycle Institute where he uses high impact learning techniques to teach courses including Reliability Excellence for Managers (RxM). He is also certified by PROSCI as a Change Management professional and is very adept at applying these principles to create successful client outcomes. A persuasive, respected leader and team builder, Paul is skilled in cross-functional collaboration with all operating departments of an organization.
 Joel Levitt

Joel Levitt, CRL, CPMM


JOEL LEVITT is the Director of Reliability Projects for Reliabilityweb.com. He previously worked for Life Cycle Engineering. Mr. Levitt is a leading trainer of maintenance professionals. He has trained more than 17,000 maintenance leaders from 3000 organizations in 25 countries in over 500 sessions. He has 30 years of experience in many facets of maintenance including process control design, source equipment inspector, electrician, field service technician, maritime operations and property management. Prior to that, Levitt worked for a CMMS vendor and as an owner/manager in manufacturing. He is a frequent speaker at maintenance and engineering conferences and has written 10 popular maintenance management texts. He has also published over 200 workshops on the topic. In the past Levitt served on the safety board of ANSI, Small Business United, National Family Business Council and on the executive committee of the Miquon School. He is currently a member of AFE and Vice President of the Philadelphia chapter.

 R. KEITH MOBLEY is a Principal Consultant with Life Cycle Engineering. Keith has earned an international reputation as a leader in corporate transformations, reliability engineering and process optimization. He is on the advisory boards of ANSI and ISO; a Distinguished Lecturer for ASME; and recipient of the Smarro Award for outstanding contribution in engineering and reliability. Keith has 45 years of combined business, finance, engineering and consulting experience in a wide variety of industries. He has 20 years of international consulting experience and 25 years experience in corporate positions including V.P. Engineering and Manufacturing, V.P. Finance, V.P. Marketing, and Sales E.V.P. and COO. He has also served as President and CEO of a $50M international consulting, engineering services and training company specializing in corporate transformations. Keith has served on Technical Advisory Boards for the Technical Association for Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI), Association of Iron and Steel Engineers (AISE), Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). Motorola-Juran Institute trained, he is a Master Black Belt with hundreds of successful projects and 20 years of direct Lean-Six Sigma application. He is also certified by PROSCI in change management. Mobley is the author of 22 textbooks including: Total Plant Performance Management, Plant Engineer’s Handbook, Maintenance Engineering Handbook, Rules of Thumb for Reliability Engineers, Introduction to Predictive Maintenance.

Andrew Norman


ANDREW NORMAN has over thirty-five years of experience in the manufacturing industry as a lubrication specialist and manufacturing engineer, college instructor, heavy equipment superintendent, diesel propulsion systems expert, maintenance consultant, and mechanical equipment expert. He has extensive experience in lubrication, maintenance and reliability, manufacturing processes, root cause analysis, process documentation, plant management, maintenance planning and scheduling, and all phases of industrial asset management. Andrew brings a wealth of mechanical maintenance experience and knowledge from manufacturing processes to maintenance execution. His 35 years of manufacturing and maintenance experience at all levels provides a well-rounded expert in the areas of maintenance training, maintenance implementation, maintenance management, and process documentation. He is a PROSCI-certified change management professional. He is also an SME-certified Manufacturing Engineering Technologist, a Certified Maintenance Reliability Professional, and was an ASE-certified Master Mechanic in three separate areas; automotive, heavy-duty trucks, and automotive machining.
