Workshop Overview

The University of Alabama's Crimson Lean Six Sigma course offerings are designed for individuals and their organizations seeking to improve their overall operational and financial performance by minimizing waste and improving customer satisfaction. 

Our Green and Black Belt training courses (see detailed descriptions below) are delivered in an online format to help you master the material on your own time and at your own pace. The final exam will be administered online at the end of the course term.

Other stand-alone, open-entry online course offerings, which are designed for foundational learning and knowledge extension, include our Lean 1-2-3 , Kaizen Leader course and our Lean Methods Accelerator course. These courses are licensed offerings from our software partner, MoreSteam.com.

Title Overview
Transactional Green Belt

The University of Alabama's Crimson Lean Six Sigma Transactional Green Belt is designed for individuals and their organizations seeking to improve their overall operational and financial performance by minimizing waste and improving customer satisfaction. This course is delivered in an online learning format which enables you to master the material on your own time and at your own pace. 

During the course term, you will propose and receive instructor approval of a real-work application project to be worked through to completion. Additionally, you will interact with instructors and other students in your e-learning class study halls and private coaching sessions. The final exam will be administered online at the end of the course term.

This instructor-supported course is 80 hours long, and you have access to the materials for 365 days. When you enroll in the EngineRoom for Excel version, you receive a free copy of EngineRoom® for Excel, MoreSteam's Microsoft® Excel®-based data analysis tool. The Minitab version requires you to separately purchase that software.

Course includes Engine Room (ER) software with no additional fee. Participants may also use EXCEL SPC software which must be purchased separately.

Black Belt

The University of Alabama's Crimson Lean Six Sigma Black Belt is designed for individuals and their organizations seeking to improve their overall operational and financial performance by minimizing waste and improving customer satisfaction. This course is delivered in an online learning format which enables you to master the material on your own time and at your own pace. 

During the course term, you will propose and receive instructor approval of a real-work application project to be worked through to completion. Additionally, you will interact with instructors and other students in your e-leaarning class study halls and private coaching sessions.

This program combines proven technology and personal interaction to achieve optimum results. Guided by our experience in working with thousands of corporate clients, we have developed an approach to develop the individual's capability to effect meaningful process change, not to merely pass a test or complete a pretend project.

This instructor-supported course is 140 hours long, and you have access to the materials for 365 days. When you enroll in the EngineRoom for Excel version, you receive a free copy of EngineRoom® for Excel, MoreSteam's Microsoft® Excel®-based data analysis tool. Lean 1-2-3 Bundled

Lean 1-2-3 enables progressive training in problem solving using Lean methods, guiding the learner through introductory concepts to advanced topics with the use of commonly applied toolsets and critical thinking frameworks. By dividing the curriculum into three online modules, learners have access to the most appropriate coursework “just-in-time” as they may complete one, two, or all three modules depending on their needs. 

The cornerstone of the program is MoreSteam’s Inbox® Lean Office Simulation, which provides all learners with practice applying problem-solving methods in a collaborative, rapid-improvement environment.

Lean 1-2 Bundled

Lean 1-2 enables progressive training in problem solving using Lean methods, guiding the learner through introductory concepts to advanced topics with the use of commonly applied toolsets and critical thinking frameworks. By dividing the curriculum into two online modules, learners have access to the most appropriate coursework “just-in-time” as they may complete one or both modules depending on their needs. 

The cornerstone of the program is MoreSteam’s Inbox® Lean Office Simulation, which provides all learners with practice applying problem-solving methods in a collaborative, rapid-improvement environment.

Lean 1

This first module creates a “base layer” of lean knowledge and instills a lean mindset company-wide. Lean 1 introduces the fundamentals of Lean, including:

  • Foundational problem-solving;
  • Sources of value and sources of waste;
  • Process mapping basics; and
  • Beginner's basics on tools such as 5-S, visual management, and standardized work.

Learners who complete Lean 1 will understand the lean mindset and basic problem-solving.

Lean 2

This module builds on the Lean 1 toolbox with detailed overviews and practice exercises in critical areas such as:

  • Problem definition and Voice of the Customer (VOC) analysis;
  • Value Stream Mapping;
  • Data collection and measurement using MoreSteam's web-based EngineRoom® application; and
  • Continuous flow.

Learners who complete Lean 2 will be able to engage in basic problem solving, participating in or leading small projects or A3 sessions.

Lean 3

This module adds more advanced tools to learners’ problem-solving skills and engages them in critical data analysis processes using EngineRoom® software. Highlights of Lean 3 include:

  • Cause and Effect Matrix, Histogram, and Trend Chart toolsets;
  • Derivative performance metrics;
  • Total Productive Maintenance; and
  • Leader standard work.

Learners who complete Lean 3 will be well equipped to frame problems with data and engage in data stratification and prediction during projects.

Kaizen Leader

This course is offered exclusively online and develops skills needed to effectively plan and lead a Kaizen Event, i.e., a series of process improvement activities intended to extend over a period of 3-5 days. The course provides a flexible framework for planning, executing and reporting Kaizen activities. Course content includes essential lean tools and techniques to identify and eliminate process waste including: value stream mapping, continuous flow, takt time, kaizen, line balancing, quick changeover, and 5-S, among others.

Lean Methods Accelerator

This course is offered exclusively online and provides a comprehensive overview of Lean Enterprise tools and methods which may be used to supplement a Six Sigma curriculum. Lean topics include value stream mapping, continuous flow, takt time, kaizen, line balancing, quick changeover, pull system, and 5-S, among others. Upon course completion, participants will be proficient in the fundamental tools and language of Lean and will have learned the skills to effectively guide and support process improvement activities.
